I purchased a universal Emerson motor online to replace the bad condenser fan motor. After a lot of research I am still not comfortable installing the motor myself. Here are some of my high level concerns and questions. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. My old fan motor has three wires – black, purple and brown.

Before that though the fan would never come on no matter how hot the coolant temp got. So what I would like to do is hard wire a switch to the leads on the fan. Its a 91 Escort Pony 1. I found out which wires need to be hooked up to pos and neg for the fan to turn in the correct direction but I was using the battery terminals. That caused the wires to get excessively hot. Would grounding out to the chassis prevent too much current from flowing there-by preventing the wires from getting to hot?
Or would I need to wire some other component inline to prevent this? Generally, the radiator fan is hooked to a fan relay. A relay is an electrical switch which is activated by another electrical circuit. In a radiator fan this activation circuit is usually by a temperature switch or from the PCM. A separate switch can be useful but is usually used as an override to some sort of temperature control. The use of override is used for instance when you want the fan to activate when the temperature switch has yet to activate ie you turn it on before doing a drag switch run.
If no temperature control is active, the fan will not activate unless the operator notices a temperature variation.

Verify that the power is off with your electrical meter by setting your meter to measure voltage and touching the probe ends to the lead side on the contactor. This is where the wires enter the unit.
The start connection commands a series of connections up to its winding. If the motor has a switch on the rotor with a pair of connections that are closed when the motor is not running, take one wire and put it on the start cap, and then connect the cap to that contact.
Use a quad two input NOR, with two of its gates simply used as inverters. I would certainly include this circuit during software development although it may be possible to omit it from the final board once the firmware is fully debugged. However I’d still prefer a relay for reversing. If you use a relay, the only possible failure modes result in the motor running constantly, possibly in th wrong direction or not running at all.
There is no way that both motor windings can get powered unless the relay contacts get crushed by external damage, so motor burn-out is extremely unlikely. If you are determined to avoid using a relay, consider adding a motor current sensor. If you can sense if the motor is still drawing current with the control signals off, you have detected that one of the TRIACs has failed so can avoid switching on the other TRIAC and burning out the motor.
